It is in looking to the nightmare that the dream is found. - Audre Lorde

This image has been circulating like crazy over the Internet. Surprise, surprise. Some people may find it amusing, & yes, go ahead, get your seconds of kicks & giggles from it. This image, however, beyond the surface, is a reflection on our societal values. Divorce rates are higher than ever in this country; the United States is actually ranked #5 in terms of the country with the highest divorce rates. What irks me the most is that society thinks gay marriages & the Women’s Movement have/will destroy the institution of the family. Why is it problematic for gays to marry? Why is it a problem for women to be liberated & assume roles outside of the private sphere, the home or any role outside of the norm? Why isn’t the ease of getting a divorce being called into question more often? We as a society are contributing in this destruction by making divorce easy as 1, 2, 3. What does American society really value, really? I think we should make marriage a harder process for couples because if you can easily get divorced, why marry in the first place? The ease of getting a divorce devalues the meaning of family in my opinion. We as a society need to rethink & revaluate our values.
